Code 39: The Industrial Standard

Code 39 (or Code 3 of 9) was the first alphanumeric symbology ever developed. While it takes up more space than Code 128, its simplicity and robustness make it a favorite in the automotive and defense industries.

What can it store?

Code 39 allows you to use:

Numbers (0-9)
Uppercase Letters (A-Z)
Special Characters: - . $ / + % and space

Common Uses

You will frequently see Code 39 used for employee ID badges, internal inventory tags, and labeling machinery. It does not require a checksum digit (though one can be added), making it incredibly easy to integrate into custom legacy systems.
