The Universal Product Code (UPC-A)

The UPC-A is the most recognizable barcode in North America. Since the first pack of chewing gum was scanned in 1974, UPC-A has been the standard for tracking trade items in stores across the United States and Canada.

UPC-A vs. EAN-13

While they look similar, UPC-A encodes 12 digits, whereas EAN-13 encodes 13. Technically, a UPC-A code is just a subset of EAN-13 (often represented with a leading zero in databases). If your primary market is North America, this is the format you need for your product packaging.

Best Practices

When printing your UPC barcode, ensure there is high contrast (black bars on white background is best) and "quiet zones" (empty white space) on both the left and right sides of the bars. This ensures laser scanners can pick up the code instantly at checkout.
