Understanding the EAN-13 Standard

The International Article Number, formerly known as the European Article Number (EAN-13), is the standard barcode format for retail products everywhere in the world except North America. If you pick up a soda can or a book in London, Tokyo, or Sydney, it likely has an EAN-13 code.

Structure of an EAN-13 Code

This barcode strictly requires 13 numeric digits. It is composed of:

  • Country Code: The first 2-3 digits indicating the GS1 member organization.
  • Manufacturer Code: A unique ID assigned to your company.
  • Product Code: The unique reference number for the specific item.
  • Check Digit: The final digit, calculated mathematically to verify the barcode's integrity.

Our tool automatically calculates the correct Check Digit for you if you provide the first 12 digits, ensuring your barcode is valid for scanning.
