ITF-14 and Corrugated Packaging

ITF-14 is the implementation of the Interleaved 2 of 5 symbology for encoding a Global Trade Item Number (GTIN). Unlike retail barcodes, ITF-14 is specifically designed to be printed directly onto corrugated cardboard.

Why the Thick Bars?

Cardboard is porous and absorbs ink, which can cause thin barcode lines to bleed and become unreadable. ITF-14 uses wider bars and greater tolerances to ensure that scanners in warehouses and distribution centers can read the code accurately, even on rough surfaces.

The Bearer Bar

You will notice a thick black frame around ITF-14 codes. This is called the "Bearer Bar." It supports the printing plate to ensure even pressure and prevents the scan from reading incomplete data if the scanner beam enters the code at an angle.
